EV charger installation for homes and multi unit properties

A Level 2 charger is the single biggest continuous load most homes will ever add. Installing one safely starts with whether your panel and service can carry it. We check that first, recommend the right circuit and charger setup, pull the permit and get it inspected, so the charger you buy works the way it should for years.

What we check before you buy a charger

Most Level 2 chargers run on a 240 volt circuit in the 40 to 60 amp range. Whether your home can add that without an upgrade depends on the size of the service and what is already on it. We run a load calculation, look at panel space and the distance from the panel to where you park, and then recommend the most cost effective option:

  • A dedicated circuit on the existing panel when the capacity is there
  • A charger set to a lower amperage, which still charges most cars fully overnight
  • A load management device that shares capacity with other large appliances
  • A subpanel or a full service upgrade when the load calculation calls for it

Hardwired or plug in

Chargers can be hardwired or plugged into a 240 volt receptacle. Hardwired installs are generally the cleaner long term choice and allow higher charging current; a receptacle can make sense if you expect to change chargers. We install either, to the charger manufacturer's instructions and the electrical code.

Multi unit and commercial charging

Apartment buildings, condos and businesses need a different plan: how many spaces, how chargers share the building's capacity, and how usage gets metered or billed. We handle the load study, the service work and the installation, and coordinate with the utility when the building's service has to grow.

Rebates

Utilities and the state offer charger and panel upgrade incentives that change often. Check your utility's current programs before you buy; we provide the permit and invoice documentation those programs usually ask for.

Common questions

Yes. A new 240 volt circuit for an EV charger requires an electrical permit and an inspection in every city and county we work in. We pull it and schedule the inspection as part of the job.

Not always. Many homes with a 200 amp service can add a charger on a dedicated circuit, and load management devices can avoid an upgrade on smaller services. Older 100 amp services often do need an upgrade. The load calculation answers it.

Yes. We check which panel and meter should feed it so the charging cost lands on the right account, then install and permit it the same way.
