Learn more →Commerce is industrial and warehouse property with some residential pockets, so three phase service and distribution work dominate. The city permits its own jobs.
Commerce incorporated in 1960 to protect its industrial base, and today rail yards, freight terminals, warehouses and manufacturing plants cover most of its land. The former Uniroyal tire factory, now the Citadel Outlets, is a reminder of how heavy the industry here once was. Many industrial buildings date from the 1940s through the 1970s and still have original switchboards that were sized for operations very different from the logistics and light manufacturing tenants of today.
Residential neighborhoods make up a smaller share of the city, with modest single family homes from the 1920s through the 1950s. Those owners call about panels that need replacing, older wiring and added load from air conditioning. The commercial side dominates the work, though. Facility managers call when a warehouse is being retrofitted for a new tenant, when three phase equipment is coming in, or when fleet charging is being planned for trucks and vans.
Commerce industrial buildings converting to new tenants often need larger three phase services and new distribution for modern equipment.
How we handle it →Logistics sites in Commerce are adding fleet charging for delivery vans and trucks, which requires a service capacity study before design.
How we handle it →Small 1950s houses in Commerce's residential pockets sometimes keep their Zinsco or Federal Pacific boxes, and carriers increasingly want them gone.
How we handle it →Electrical work in Commerce is permitted through City of Commerce, and the service is energized by Southern California Edison. We handle the permit application, the plan check where one is required, the inspection scheduling and the utility coordination as part of the job.
The City of Commerce permits electrical work for industrial and residential property. Large commercial services need Southern California Edison to review the load and approve the new gear before ordering, and switchgear lead times can stretch, so that request goes in early. Once Edison signs off, the city issues the permit, power is cut for the changeover, and the inspector has to pass the gear before Edison puts the building back on line. Small residential panel swaps skip most of that front end planning.
Start with a load study of the existing service. Fleet charging is a large continuous load, and many older Commerce buildings do not have spare capacity. From there we size chargers, look at load management to stretch existing capacity and, if needed, plan a service upgrade with Edison. Knowing the numbers first keeps the project realistic.
It depends on what is behind the walls. Homes from the 1920s and 1930s may still have cloth insulated or ungrounded wiring, which is a rewire conversation. Many 1950s homes have serviceable wiring but an outdated panel. We inspect the panel, test circuits and open a few boxes before telling you which you need.
Electrical permits in Commerce are issued by City of Commerce. Morff Electric handles the permit application, the plan check where one is required, and the inspection scheduling as part of the job.
Commerce is served by Southern California Edison. On a service upgrade or a meter stack the utility has to disconnect and reconnect the service, and Morff Electric coordinates that scheduling so the outage stays as short as possible.
