Meter stack installations and upgrades
Modern, space saving solutions for multi unit properties that allow individual metering.
Learn more →Palmdale grew fast through the 1980s and 1990s, so most homes here have 100 to 200 amp panels that were sized before anyone owned an EV. Desert heat also punishes exterior meter enclosures and outdoor conduit, which is why service equipment out here ages faster than it does down in the basin.
Most of the city is stucco tract housing from the boom that took Palmdale from about 12,000 residents in 1980 to nearly 69,000 by 1990. Those subdivisions went up fast, usually with builder grade panels on a garage wall or side yard, and plenty of them still have the original breakers. West side developments like Rancho Vista and Anaverde came later and are generally in better shape. The older streets around downtown hold smaller postwar homes and a good share of the city's apartment complexes.
Many residents work at Air Force Plant 42 or commute down the 14, and the calls follow that pattern. Homeowners want a Level 2 charger for a long daily drive, or a second condenser because one AC unit cannot keep up in July. Landlords with rentals on the east side usually call after an insurance renewal or a buyer's inspection flags a panel with no room left for breakers. On duplexes and small complexes, the fix is often a service upgrade plus new meter sockets at the same time.
The 1980s and 1990s tracts that make up most of Palmdale were built on panels that cannot add a charger, a heat pump and a second AC.
How we handle it →Long commutes down the 14 to the basin make a Level 2 charger in the garage one of the most practical upgrades a Palmdale owner can make.
How we handle it →Smaller postwar homes near downtown Palmdale still turn up Zinsco and Federal Pacific panels that insurers flag at renewal or sale.
How we handle it →Electrical work in Palmdale is permitted through City of Palmdale, and the service is energized by Southern California Edison. We handle the permit application, the plan check where one is required, the inspection scheduling and the utility coordination as part of the job.
Palmdale runs its own building and safety division, so a panel or service change is permitted with the city, not the county. Edison owns the drop and the meter. We pull the city permit, open an SCE service order and book the disconnect, swap the equipment, then call for the city inspection. Once it passes, the release goes to Edison and power is restored. Palmdale's community choice program only changes who buys the energy. Edison still handles the physical service.
Sometimes, but it takes a real load calculation, not a guess. Solar backfeeds the panel, and electrical code limits how much a busbar can accept, so a small panel often cannot take a full size system without a main breaker derate or a new panel. Add a 40 or 50 amp charger and many Palmdale homes cross the line. We run the numbers first and tell you which upgrade, if any, is actually needed.
The power is off for the swap itself, so we schedule it for a single working day and give tenants notice in advance. We handle the permit, the Edison disconnect and the inspection, then provide the documentation the insurer asks for, usually photos and the finaled permit. If the meter socket or service entrance is worn too, it is cheaper to replace it in the same visit than to come back.
Electrical permits in Palmdale are issued by City of Palmdale. Morff Electric handles the permit application, the plan check where one is required, and the inspection scheduling as part of the job.
Palmdale is served by Southern California Edison. On a service upgrade or a meter stack the utility has to disconnect and reconnect the service, and Morff Electric coordinates that scheduling so the outage stays as short as possible.
