Learn more →Quartz Hill kept its half acre and one acre lots while the tract housing filled in around it, so long service runs from the pole to the house are normal here and voltage drop is a real design question, not a footnote. Because the area is unincorporated, permits go through LA County rather than a city counter.
Until the 1970s, much of Quartz Hill was almond orchards, alfalfa fields and turkey ranches. Homes arrived piece by piece after that, so a single street can hold a 1960s ranch house on an acre, a 1980s tract home and a recent custom build. Older properties often have a detached garage, workshop or old pump house fed from the house panel through buried wire of unknown age. Those feeders are one of the most common things we find once the panel cover comes off.
A lot of households have ties to the aerospace plants in Palmdale and Lancaster, and the projects lean practical: a shop subpanel for a welder or compressor, a charger at the end of the driveway, a mini split for a converted outbuilding. Roughly a third of homes are rentals, so landlords call when a tenant's AC trips the main or an insurer flags old equipment. Horse owners add barn lighting and heated waterers for winter, which adds up quickly on a small service.
Half acre and acre lots in Quartz Hill carry shops, barns and outbuildings that older 100 amp services were never sized to feed.
How we handle it →Ranch homes built in the 1960s and 1970s around Quartz Hill are prime candidates for Zinsco or Federal Pacific panels that insurers reject.
How we handle it →Commutes to the aerospace plants and beyond make a garage charger common, and long driveways mean planning the circuit run carefully.
How we handle it →Electrical work in Quartz Hill is permitted through LA County Public Works (unincorporated), and the service is energized by Southern California Edison. We handle the permit application, the plan check where one is required, the inspection scheduling and the utility coordination as part of the job.
The Quartz Hill name covers more ground than the unincorporated community, because neighboring districts of Lancaster and Palmdale use it too. If the parcel is in the county area, LA County Public Works issues the permit. If it is inside a city, the city does. Edison serves all of it. Once the permit is in hand we book the SCE disconnect, complete the work and call for inspection, and the passed inspection is what clears Edison to restore power.
There is no single cutoff. It depends on the load and the wire size. Electrical code recommends keeping voltage drop to roughly 3 percent on a feeder, and on a 150 or 200 foot run to a shop with a welder, that often means stepping up a wire size or two. We size the feeder for the actual tools you run, so motors start cleanly and breakers do not trip.
Possibly, if the barn load is light, such as lighting, a few outlets and a waterer. Add a tack room heater, fans or a well pump and the numbers change fast. We do a load calculation for the whole property first. If the existing service has room, we run a properly sized feeder to a barn subpanel. If not, upgrading to 200 amps at the same time usually costs less than doing it later.
Electrical permits in Quartz Hill are issued by LA County Public Works (unincorporated). Morff Electric handles the permit application, the plan check where one is required, and the inspection scheduling as part of the job.
Quartz Hill is served by Southern California Edison. On a service upgrade or a meter stack the utility has to disconnect and reconnect the service, and Morff Electric coordinates that scheduling so the outage stays as short as possible.
