Meter stack installations and upgrades
Modern, space saving solutions for multi unit properties that allow individual metering.
Learn more →Sun Village has older single family homes on generous lots, and a good share of the service equipment out here has been baking in the sun for decades. Enclosure corrosion and failing meter sockets are common findings on a service upgrade walk.
In 1939 Melvin Ray Grubbs bought 1,000 acres east of Palmdale and founded what became the Antelope Valley's first Black community, the origin of today's Sun Village. Much of the housing is older single family homes on generous lots, built from the postwar years on, with newer infill in between. Households here are big, close to four people on average, and that shows up in the electrical: added bedrooms, converted garages and extra AC units on services sized for a much smaller family.
What we see on most Sun Village walkthroughs is decades of practical additions. A back house for relatives, a second refrigerator in the garage, a window unit in every room. When an owner wants to replace all of that with central air or a permitted ADU, the service and panel are the starting point. Owners who have inherited a family home often ask for a full assessment first, so they can decide what to fix now and what can wait.
Large Sun Village households run more appliances and AC than these older homes were wired for, so services often need to grow.
How we handle it →Postwar and 1960s homes in Sun Village are in the age range where insurers flag Zinsco and Federal Pacific panels.
How we handle it →Decades of added rooms and garage conversions in Sun Village leave mixed and ungrounded wiring that a rewire puts back in order.
How we handle it →Electrical work in Sun Village is permitted through LA County Public Works (unincorporated), and the service is energized by Southern California Edison. We handle the permit application, the plan check where one is required, the inspection scheduling and the utility coordination as part of the job.
Palmdale removed Sun Village from its sphere of influence in 2014, and the community shares a standards district with Littlerock, so permits are issued by LA County Public Works. Edison supplies the power. A service upgrade runs in this order: county permit, Edison disconnect appointment, panel and meter work, county inspection, then reconnection once Edison has the release. ADU projects usually add a separate building permit, which we coordinate alongside the electrical.
In most cases, yes, though the service often needs to be upgraded first. A detached unit with its own kitchen, AC and water heater adds a significant load. We run a load calculation for both buildings, then plan either a larger main service with a subpanel feeding the unit or, in some cases, a separate meter. The county will also require a building permit for the unit itself.
The main question is whether the panel can handle a condenser and air handler on dedicated circuits. Window units are spread across general circuits, and removing them frees some capacity, but central air still needs its own 30 to 50 amp circuit. On a 100 amp service with an electric range and dryer, an upgrade is common. We check the panel before the HVAC unit is ordered.
Electrical permits in Sun Village are issued by LA County Public Works (unincorporated). Morff Electric handles the permit application, the plan check where one is required, and the inspection scheduling as part of the job.
Sun Village is served by Southern California Edison. On a service upgrade or a meter stack the utility has to disconnect and reconnect the service, and Morff Electric coordinates that scheduling so the outage stays as short as possible.
