Learn more →Chino Hills is mostly 1980s through 2000s hillside subdivisions, but it also has Los Serranos, with narrow lots dating to a 1920s resort subdivision, and the rural canyon homes of Carbon Canyon. The newer homes need capacity for EVs and solar, while the older pockets can hide original wiring and very small services.
Los Serranos began in the 1920s around a golf club, and many lots there are about thirty feet wide, with narrow homes built over the decades that followed. Carbon Canyon, including Sleepy Hollow, has older cabins and hillside homes on rugged lots with long service runs. Those two areas are where we find the oldest wiring, fused services and additions wired without permits, plus overhead services that run through trees in high fire risk terrain.
Most of the rest of the city, including Butterfield Ranch and the neighborhoods around it, was built in the 1980s and 1990s, with gated Vellano and other later developments adding larger homes. Those houses usually have 200 amp services that are sound but full. Most requests involve EV chargers, solar plus battery, pool equipment, and getting HOA sign off on exterior changes. Owners in canyon areas also ask about battery backup during power shutoffs.
Chino Hills' 1980s and 1990s homes generally have room for Level 2 chargers, but full panels often need load management or a subpanel.
How we handle it →Chino Hills homes adding solar, batteries and pool equipment often hit the limit of an existing 200 amp service or panel busbar.
How we handle it →Older Los Serranos and Carbon Canyon homes can have original or unpermitted wiring that needs replacing before remodels or sale.
How we handle it →Electrical work in Chino Hills is permitted through City of Chino Hills, and the service is energized by Southern California Edison. We handle the permit application, the plan check where one is required, the inspection scheduling and the utility coordination as part of the job.
Permits in Chino Hills come from the city's building division, with Southern California Edison as the utility. After the permit is issued, the outage, installation and city inspection happen together, and Edison reconnects after approval. In Carbon Canyon and other fire prone areas, Edison may suggest or require moving an overhead service underground or changing the service point, so we confirm Edison's plan before finalizing the design.
It can. Narrow lots leave little space between homes, which limits where a meter and panel can go while meeting Edison's clearance rules. Older homes there may also have the service attached in a spot that no longer meets code. We look at the site, confirm Edison's requirements, and plan the upgrade so the new equipment fits without a costly relocation if possible.
In most cases. Homes in the canyon are among those most likely to see Edison's public safety power shutoffs during wind events. A battery system, with or without solar, can keep critical circuits running. We check the existing service and panel, then size the backup for what you need, such as refrigeration, well pumps, medical equipment or lights.
Electrical permits in Chino Hills are issued by City of Chino Hills. Morff Electric handles the permit application, the plan check where one is required, and the inspection scheduling as part of the job.
Chino Hills is served by Southern California Edison. On a service upgrade or a meter stack the utility has to disconnect and reconnect the service, and Morff Electric coordinates that scheduling so the outage stays as short as possible.
