Meter stack installations and upgrades
Modern, space saving solutions for multi unit properties that allow individual metering.
Learn more →Hollywood mixes 1920s apartment courts with newer mixed use construction, and the older buildings often still run on the original service with a patchwork of added circuits. Metering upgrades for multi unit properties are constant here.
Below Franklin Avenue the flats are a grid of bungalow courts, Spanish revival fourplexes and two and three story walk-ups from the 1920s and 1930s, with large mixed use projects along Sunset, Hollywood Boulevard and the transit stops. Above Franklin the streets climb into the Hollywood Hills, Whitley Heights and Beachwood Canyon, where period revival homes sit on narrow winding roads. The same neighborhood can hold a 1924 court and a new podium building on the next lot.
In the older rental stock we find fuse boxes and early breaker panels still feeding apartments, two wire circuits with no ground, and window AC units running on circuits never meant for them. Property managers call when a unit turnover exposes old wiring, when tenants want central air, or when a lender or insurer wants the electrical documented. Hillside owners usually call about a remodel that has outgrown the original service, or about adding an EV charger where the panel is already full.
Hollywood's 1920s and 1930s apartment courts and fourplexes often run on original metering that cannot support added units or modern appliance loads.
How we handle it →Prewar Hollywood apartments still carry ungrounded two wire circuits that fail during turnovers, remodels and insurance inspections.
How we handle it →Hillside homes above Franklin are adding central air, kitchens and EV chargers that the original service was never sized to carry.
How we handle it →Electrical work in Hollywood is permitted through LA Dept of Building and Safety, and the service is energized by LADWP. We handle the permit application, the plan check where one is required, the inspection scheduling and the utility coordination as part of the job.
Hollywood is inside the City of Los Angeles, so LADBS issues the permit and LADWP is the utility. Parts of Hollywood sit inside historic preservation overlay zones such as Whitley Heights and Spaulding Square, where a relocated meter or new exterior equipment visible from the street can need preservation review. On a typical Hollywood job we pull the permit, LADWP cuts power on the scheduled day, the new equipment goes in, LADBS inspects it, and LADWP turns the power back on.
Sometimes, but it depends on the service feeding the court. Many courts were built with one modest service split into small fused circuits. If the main service has room, unit subpanels can be added in phases. If it does not, the service and metering get upgraded first, then each bungalow is brought onto its own breaker panel.
It changes the logistics more than the code. Crews, materials and sometimes a lift have to work around tight streets and steep driveways, and the service path from the pole to the house can be long. We look at where the meter can legally sit, how the service drop or underground line reaches it, and plan the LADWP outage around access.
Electrical permits in Hollywood are issued by LA Dept of Building and Safety. Morff Electric handles the permit application, the plan check where one is required, and the inspection scheduling as part of the job.
Hollywood is served by LADWP. On a service upgrade or a meter stack the utility has to disconnect and reconnect the service, and Morff Electric coordinates that scheduling so the outage stays as short as possible.
