Meter stack installations and upgrades
Modern, space saving solutions for multi unit properties that allow individual metering.
Learn more →Miracle Mile is prewar apartment buildings and duplexes along with commercial frontage. Meter stacks from the 1930s are still in service here more often than people expect.
The boulevard was laid out in the 1920s as a shopping district built for cars, and Art Deco and Streamline Moderne commercial buildings still line it, along with Museum Row: LACMA, the La Brea Tar Pits, the Petersen and the Academy Museum. North and south of Wilshire, the residential streets are mostly 1920s and 1930s Spanish revival duplexes, fourplexes and small apartment buildings, with Park La Brea's towers and garden apartments to the north. Newer apartment buildings have been going up along Wilshire, especially along the D Line subway extension.
In the residential blocks, a typical building has a meter cluster on the side wall feeding small unit panels, sometimes still fused, with ungrounded circuits inside. Upstairs units in duplexes often have the weakest service. Owners call when an insurer wants old panels replaced, when tenants add AC and laundry, or when a unit turnover exposes old wiring. Commercial owners on Wilshire call about tenant improvement work and aging switchgear in older buildings.
Miracle Mile's 1930s duplexes and fourplexes still rely on original meter clusters far more often than owners expect when they buy.
How we handle it →Prewar Spanish revival units in the Miracle Mile commonly have ungrounded two wire circuits behind original plaster, which fails insurance and buyer inspections.
How we handle it →Duplex owners in the Miracle Mile frequently upgrade each unit's service to add central air, in unit laundry and modern kitchens.
How we handle it →Electrical work in Miracle Mile is permitted through LA Dept of Building and Safety, and the service is energized by LADWP. We handle the permit application, the plan check where one is required, the inspection scheduling and the utility coordination as part of the job.
Permits in the Miracle Mile come from LADBS and power from LADWP, since the area is part of the City of Los Angeles. Large sections fall inside the Miracle Mile and Miracle Mile North historic preservation overlay zones, where exterior changes like a relocated meter bank or conduit on a street facing wall may need review. After any review, the steps are the permit, the LADWP outage, the work, the LADBS inspection and LADWP reconnection.
Yes. Interior panel work is generally not affected, and meter replacement is routine. The question is mostly location, since moving meters to a street facing wall or adding visible exterior conduit can trigger preservation review. Keeping the new meter bank where the old one was, or on a side or rear wall, usually keeps the process simple.
More common than people think. Many 1930s duplexes and fourplexes had their meters replaced at some point while the unit fuse panels stayed. Fuses themselves are not illegal, but insurers often object, and the wiring behind them is usually just as old. We check each unit and quote replacement panels with any wiring work found during the inspection.
Electrical permits in Miracle Mile are issued by LA Dept of Building and Safety. Morff Electric handles the permit application, the plan check where one is required, and the inspection scheduling as part of the job.
Miracle Mile is served by LADWP. On a service upgrade or a meter stack the utility has to disconnect and reconnect the service, and Morff Electric coordinates that scheduling so the outage stays as short as possible.
