Meter stack installations and upgrades
Modern, space saving solutions for multi unit properties that allow individual metering.
Learn more →Arleta is compact single family housing with a lot of converted garages and back houses. Getting a property legal here usually means one new service, a proper meter arrangement and an LADBS inspection.
Arleta was the western part of Pacoima until the 5 freeway divided the area, and residents won recognition as a separate neighborhood in 1968. Its post office opened in 1954, around the time the tracts filled in. The housing is mostly modest single story homes, many with the same floor plans repeated down the block, and about four in five are owner occupied. Households average around four people, and many lots have grown with added rooms, patios and back houses. The McFly house from Back to the Future sits on one of these streets.
High owner occupancy means Arleta families tend to keep homes for decades and improve them over time, often adding loads without adding capacity. A typical call involves a 100 amp panel feeding the house, a converted garage, a laundry room addition and several window AC units. We also see aging overhead service masts and drops on the original houses. EV chargers are a growing request as families add electric commuter cars, and they usually bring the capacity conversation forward.
Arleta homes running a house, converted garage and several AC units on one 100 amp panel usually need a 200 amp upgrade.
How we handle it →Long term Arleta owners often still have the Zinsco or Federal Pacific panel installed decades ago, and insurers now ask for it to go.
How we handle it →Arleta families adding electric commuter cars need a dedicated charger circuit, which often brings the service size question forward.
How we handle it →Electrical work in Arleta is permitted through LA Dept of Building and Safety, and the service is energized by LADWP. We handle the permit application, the plan check where one is required, the inspection scheduling and the utility coordination as part of the job.
When an Arleta back house or converted garage is being legalized, the electrical work is permitted with the building work, and the inspector looks at the whole property. On a service change, LADWP disconnects the old drop after the permit is issued, we install the new mast and panel, LADBS inspects, and LADWP reconnects.
It depends on where the problem is. LADWP owns the service drop from the pole to the connection point at your house. The mast, weatherhead, meter base and everything after it belong to the owner. If the mast is bent or pulling away from the roof, that is our work, done under an LADBS permit with LADWP handling the disconnect. If the line itself is low or damaged, call LADWP.
Sometimes, if the load calculation shows room. A gas dryer and a small mini split may fit on an existing 100 amp service. An electric dryer, central AC or a heat pump usually will not. We calculate the house as it is plus what you plan to add, then tell you plainly whether new circuits are enough or whether the service has to grow.
Electrical permits in Arleta are issued by LA Dept of Building and Safety. Morff Electric handles the permit application, the plan check where one is required, and the inspection scheduling as part of the job.
Arleta is served by LADWP. On a service upgrade or a meter stack the utility has to disconnect and reconnect the service, and Morff Electric coordinates that scheduling so the outage stays as short as possible.
