Meter stack installations and upgrades
Modern, space saving solutions for multi unit properties that allow individual metering.
Learn more →Winnetka is dense postwar single family housing with a heavy layer of converted garages and added units. That combination is why meter and subpanel work here so often turns into a permitted service upgrade through LADBS.
Winnetka began in the early 1920s as Charles Weeks' poultry colony, a settlement of one acre egg farms named after a farm Weeks had owned in Illinois. The egg ranches gave way to tract housing after the war, and by the 1960s most of the neighborhood was single story homes on modest lots. Apartment buildings and small commercial strips line the main boulevards, including Winnetka Avenue, Sherman Way and Roscoe. A large share of the homes are rented, and many hold more people than they were built for.
More people means heavier loads: extra refrigerators, window AC units in several rooms, space heaters and laundry running daily, often on a 100 amp service. When a garage becomes a bedroom or a back unit, those loads multiply. Winnetka owners call us when breakers trip constantly, when a lender or insurer inspects, or when they want to make an added unit legal. We also replace aging Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels and install EV chargers for commuters headed to Warner Center and beyond.
Winnetka homes carrying converted garages and back units on a single 100 amp service usually need an upgrade to pass the load calculation.
How we handle it →Postwar Winnetka houses frequently still have Federal Pacific or Zinsco panels from the 1960s, a regular insurer and lender flag.
How we handle it →Winnetka commuters adding Level 2 chargers often find the panel full, which calls for load management or a service upgrade.
How we handle it →Electrical work in Winnetka is permitted through LA Dept of Building and Safety, and the service is energized by LADWP. We handle the permit application, the plan check where one is required, the inspection scheduling and the utility coordination as part of the job.
Making an added Winnetka unit legal usually involves a building permit for the space and an electrical permit for the service, feeder and subpanel. On the electrical side, LADWP shuts off power after the permit issues, and turns it back on once LADBS passes the new work. If a second meter is part of the plan, LADWP needs to approve its location before we set it.
Yes. We inspect what was installed, tell you what can stay and what has to be replaced, and design a proper subpanel or circuits sized for the space. Legalizing the conversion itself goes through LADBS as a building permit, and the electrical work is permitted and inspected with it. Unpermitted garage wiring often uses undersized cable or extension cords inside walls, so expect some replacement.
Usually too many big loads on too few circuits. Window AC units, a second refrigerator and laundry sharing a circuit will trip a breaker on a hot evening. We trace the circuits, add dedicated ones for the heaviest loads, and check whether the main service is near its limit. Sometimes a few new circuits solve it. Sometimes the load calculation shows the service needs to grow.
Electrical permits in Winnetka are issued by LA Dept of Building and Safety. Morff Electric handles the permit application, the plan check where one is required, and the inspection scheduling as part of the job.
Winnetka is served by LADWP. On a service upgrade or a meter stack the utility has to disconnect and reconnect the service, and Morff Electric coordinates that scheduling so the outage stays as short as possible.
