Learn more →Altadena is unincorporated foothill housing from the 1900s through the 1960s, so permits run through LA County rather than Pasadena. Knob and tube and 60 amp fused services both still turn up.
The 2025 Eaton Fire changed the work here more than anything else. Large parts of the community, especially east and west of Lake Avenue in the upper foothills, are now rebuild sites, and new homes are being designed with all electric appliances, solar, batteries and EV charging from the start. That puts service size at the center of every rebuild plan. Owners need a correctly sized service and a clean path for Edison's new underground feed where the grid has been rebuilt.
On streets the fire spared, the older stock is still there: Craftsman and Spanish Revival homes from the 1910s through the 1930s, and midcentury ranch and post and beam houses higher on the slopes. Many still have knob and tube in the attic, ungrounded circuits or 1950s and 1960s panels, and some homes now carry smoke, ash or heat exposure that warrants a careful look at the service. Owners also call about restoring power to detached studios, adding backup power and preparing for insurance inspections.
Altadena fire rebuilds are going all electric with solar, batteries and chargers, which calls for a service sized for that load from day one.
How we handle it →Surviving 1910s through 1930s Altadena homes often turn up knob and tube and ungrounded circuits during insurance or post-fire inspections.
How we handle it →Midcentury homes on the upper slopes often keep 1950s and 1960s panels that insurers look at closely after the fire.
How we handle it →Rebuilt and standing Altadena homes alike are adding chargers, often paired with battery storage and backup power planning.
How we handle it →Electrical work in Altadena is permitted through LA County Public Works (unincorporated), and the service is energized by Southern California Edison. We handle the permit application, the plan check where one is required, the inspection scheduling and the utility coordination as part of the job.
Because Altadena is unincorporated, LA County Public Works Building and Safety issues the permit, not the City of Pasadena, even though the mailing address and many services look like Pasadena's. Edison provides power. On fire rebuilds, the electrical service is part of the county rebuild permit, and Edison's schedule for the new service connection often sets the pace. For repairs and upgrades on standing homes, the order is county permit, Edison disconnect, county inspection and reconnect.
It depends on the house, but most rebuilds that go all electric with a heat pump, induction cooking, a heat pump water heater, solar, a battery and one or two chargers land at 200 amps or more. A load calculation based on your actual plans settles it. Getting it right early matters because Edison designs the new service connection around the size you request.
It is a reasonable step, particularly if the house was near the burn area, lost power for a long period or had smoke and ash enter the attic. We inspect the service, the panel and accessible wiring for heat damage, corrosion and deteriorated insulation. Many older Altadena homes also turn out to have knob and tube or outdated panels that insurers ask about.
Electrical permits in Altadena are issued by LA County Public Works (unincorporated). Morff Electric handles the permit application, the plan check where one is required, and the inspection scheduling as part of the job.
Altadena is served by Southern California Edison. On a service upgrade or a meter stack the utility has to disconnect and reconnect the service, and Morff Electric coordinates that scheduling so the outage stays as short as possible.
