Learn more →Tujunga is older foothill housing on hillside lots, a lot of it built before the war and expanded since. Original services and long runs to detached structures are the usual findings, permitted through LADBS.
Tujunga began as the Little Landers colony in the 1910s, a back to the land settlement where families farmed small plots, and after World War I many people built their own homes here, often on foundations of local river boulders. That self built heritage shows in the wiring. Rooms were added by owners, outbuildings were wired with whatever was on hand, and later owners kept extending. A rewire here usually begins with a full property walk to find out what is actually connected to what.
Lots run larger than in the flat Valley, and many back up to the hills or the Big Tujunga Wash. Detached workshops, studios and garages are common, and so are long underground or overhead feeders that have aged badly. Fire risk is a real concern on the canyon edges, and some owners want their panels and service equipment brought up to date for that reason alone. We also see steady demand for heat pumps and EV charging as more families move up from the city.
Self built Tujunga homes and owner wired additions often need a full rewire to replace aging, mixed and undersized wiring.
How we handle it →Tujunga properties with detached shops, studios and garages typically outgrow original services once heat pumps or EV chargers arrive.
How we handle it →Tujunga homes built or remodeled in the 1950s through 1970s frequently carry Federal Pacific or Zinsco panels.
How we handle it →Electrical work in Tujunga is permitted through LA Dept of Building and Safety, and the service is energized by LADWP. We handle the permit application, the plan check where one is required, the inspection scheduling and the utility coordination as part of the job.
Tujunga became part of Los Angeles in 1932, so electrical permits go through LADBS and service comes from LADWP. For an upgrade we pull the LADBS permit, request the service work and disconnect from LADWP, complete the job, pass the LADBS inspection and then LADWP reconnects. Properties near the Angeles National Forest edge can fall in fire hazard zones, so we review any added requirements before the work starts.
With a permanent feeder and a subpanel. A buried or overhead feeder sized for the shop's tools, plus a small panel at the shop with its own grounding, is the code compliant way. It also keeps a heavy saw or welder from tripping house circuits. We measure the distance, check the house panel for capacity and plan the route before pulling the LADBS permit.
It can be. Thick stone or masonry walls do not let us fish wire the way we can in wood framing. We often route new circuits through the attic, the crawl space or surface mounted raceway where walls are solid. The goal is replacing old wiring without damaging the character of the house, and planning the routing before we start makes that possible.
Electrical permits in Tujunga are issued by LA Dept of Building and Safety. Morff Electric handles the permit application, the plan check where one is required, and the inspection scheduling as part of the job.
Tujunga is served by LADWP. On a service upgrade or a meter stack the utility has to disconnect and reconnect the service, and Morff Electric coordinates that scheduling so the outage stays as short as possible.
