Meter stack installations and upgrades
Modern, space saving solutions for multi unit properties that allow individual metering.
Learn more →Whittier ranges from prewar Uptown housing with knob and tube to large postwar tracts on original 100 amp services. Hillside properties here often have long feeder runs that need to be resized when the service is upgraded.
Founded by Quakers in the 1880s, Whittier has one of the older housing cores in southeast LA County. Uptown and the streets around Whittier College hold Victorians, Craftsman bungalows and Spanish revival homes from before 1930. Many of those were patched after the 1987 Whittier Narrows earthquake, so it is common to open a wall and find three generations of wiring side by side. Ungrounded circuits, undersized feeders and old fuse boxes left in place as junction points are typical findings in these houses.
North of Uptown the ground rises into Friendly Hills and the canyon streets, where homes from the 1950s through the 1970s sit on sloped lots with detached garages and pool equipment far from the meter. South and east, flat postwar tracts fill out the rest of the city. Owners in the hills tend to call about pool, spa and outdoor kitchen loads. Owners of the older Uptown homes call when a buyer's inspector or their insurance company asks what is behind the walls.
Uptown Whittier's pre-1930 homes frequently still have knob and tube runs or cloth wiring spliced into newer circuits during past remodels.
How we handle it →Hillside homes in Friendly Hills add pools, spas and outdoor kitchens that push 100 and 125 amp services past their limit.
How we handle it →Whittier's large stock of 1950s and 1960s tract homes often still has original Zinsco or Federal Pacific panels that carriers will not insure.
How we handle it →Detached garages on sloped Whittier lots mean longer charger circuits, so wire size and voltage drop need to be planned before installation.
How we handle it →Electrical work in Whittier is permitted through City of Whittier, and the service is energized by Southern California Edison. We handle the permit application, the plan check where one is required, the inspection scheduling and the utility coordination as part of the job.
Inside Whittier city limits, the city's building division issues the permit. A Whittier mailing address does not guarantee that, since several surrounding areas are unincorporated county, so we confirm the parcel before applying. With the permit in hand, Edison de-energizes the service, the new gear goes in, a city inspector signs it off, and Edison re-energizes after the sign-off reaches them. If a hillside service has to move, Edison approves the new location during design.
Yes. Several areas with Whittier mailing addresses, including South Whittier and West Whittier-Los Nietos, are unincorporated, which means LA County issues the permit instead of the city. We check the parcel before quoting so the permit is pulled in the right place. The utility is Southern California Edison either way, so the utility side of the job does not change.
For a house that still has knob and tube or cloth wiring, doing it in one project is usually cheaper than chasing circuits one at a time, because the walls and attic only get opened once. It also clears the way for insurance and lets the panel be sized for the house you actually have. We can phase the work if you are living in the home during the job.
We size the feeder for the distance, not just the load, so the garage does not see a voltage drop when a charger or compressor starts. On slopes the trench route matters too, so we look at drainage and existing lines before digging. Often a small subpanel in the garage is the cleanest way to feed a charger, lights and a workshop.
Electrical permits in Whittier are issued by City of Whittier. Morff Electric handles the permit application, the plan check where one is required, and the inspection scheduling as part of the job.
Whittier is served by Southern California Edison. On a service upgrade or a meter stack the utility has to disconnect and reconnect the service, and Morff Electric coordinates that scheduling so the outage stays as short as possible.
