Meter stack installations and upgrades
Modern, space saving solutions for multi unit properties that allow individual metering.
Learn more →Malibu is a long strip of coastal and canyon property where salt air, long service runs and fire risk shape every electrical job. Beach homes lose exterior equipment to corrosion early, hillside homes often have underground services running hundreds of feet, and many properties are rebuilding after recent wildfires.
Housing stretches along the coast and up the canyons, from beachfront homes at Carbon Beach, Malibu Colony and Broad Beach to hillside and bluff properties at Point Dume, Malibu Park and Serra Retreat. Older beach cottages from the mid twentieth century sit near large modern homes, and both have the same enemy: salt air that rusts meter sockets, panel covers and outdoor conduit. Hillside homes often have long driveways, guest houses and pool equipment spread across the parcel.
The Woolsey Fire in 2018 and the fires of late 2024 and early 2025 destroyed hundreds of homes, so a large share of current work is rebuild related: new services, temporary power for construction, and electrical plans for new homes. Owners of surviving homes ask about battery backup during Edison's power shutoffs, protecting exterior equipment, and upgrading old services. Because properties are large and spread out, conductor sizing and trench routes are real design problems here.
Malibu's coastal homes lose meter sockets and panels to salt air corrosion, so service replacement often comes before outright failure.
How we handle it →Long drives along PCH make home charging important in Malibu, and large properties often need long runs to detached garages.
How we handle it →Older Malibu beach cottages and canyon homes frequently have original or patched wiring that needs replacing during remodels or insurance reviews.
How we handle it →Electrical work in Malibu is permitted through City of Malibu, and the service is energized by Southern California Edison. We handle the permit application, the plan check where one is required, the inspection scheduling and the utility coordination as part of the job.
Malibu has its own building safety staff who issue electrical permits, and the utility is Southern California Edison. Edison may need a site visit to set or confirm the meter location before work starts. Then it is the city permit, Edison disconnect, installation and city inspection. After final approval, the city sends an electrical release to Edison so the service can be energized. On rebuild sites, coordinating the city, Edison and the general contractor is most of the job.
Very quickly. Near the water, meter sockets, panel enclosures, outdoor conduit and fittings rust years ahead of equipment inland, and corroded connections can overheat. When we replace service equipment on the coast, we use corrosion resistant enclosures and fittings, seal penetrations, and place equipment where it gets less direct spray. Regular visual checks catch problems early.
Early, ideally while the architect is still drawing. Edison has to approve the meter location and service route, and on a hillside or large lot that can drive trench routes and conduit sizes. Planning the service for solar, batteries and EV charging from the start avoids costly changes later. We can coordinate the city permit, Edison and your general contractor.
Electrical permits in Malibu are issued by City of Malibu. Morff Electric handles the permit application, the plan check where one is required, and the inspection scheduling as part of the job.
Malibu is served by Southern California Edison. On a service upgrade or a meter stack the utility has to disconnect and reconnect the service, and Morff Electric coordinates that scheduling so the outage stays as short as possible.
